I have been suffering from psoriasis for about 15 years now. It started on my scalp and then spread throughout my body over the years. I didn’t treat it before it spread all over my body. I’m 28 years now and I have had it almost half of my life. I’ve tried everything from topical ointments, herbs, tar and UV therapy. Sometimes they work but they seem to come back after a few months. Please help me as my confidence has taken a beating. I feel very depressed and am not able to concentrate on my work or my life. - Mathew.
If yours is a confirmed case of psoriasis then let me suggest that not many cases of psoriasis have a permanent cure for the condition. But we can maintain the condition with timely medications to keep the skin clear in appearance.
Several newer therapies are available which will give you good and prolonged relief from the condition. The choice of medication might be according to the severity of the lesions, association with systemic features such as joint pains, sites of involvement, age of the patient, marital status and of course one has to be conscious of the affordability of the medication by the patient.
Oral medications available provide good relief though regular follow up and investigations are required. Presently biological are available which are safe and effective, but cost is a real constraint. I suggest that there is no reason to get disheartened. Approach a dermatologist and put forward all your concerns and I am sure you will find a good solution based on your severity.
Can vitamins give you younger DNA? If yes, are the anti-wrinkle creams that are now available in the market really effective? Do they really eliminate the lines under the eyes and wrinkles on the forehead? If yes, in the flurry of products it is a Herculean task to select the best one. Could you suggest the best one in the market? Do you think there would be side-effects to them? - Shanta.
DNA is the basic structure from which our characters are determined. They are formed when we are in the womb and they remain so, unchanged. So there is no young or old DNA. Gene therapies are targeting such structures to control or prevent diseases. There is no way vitamins are going to influence DNA after birth.
Regarding the wrinkling of skin, these (as you point out) can be because of DNA in the genes which might determine our aging process and our sensitivity to external environment. Hence, we age in ways - one intrinsic method as influenced by our genetic constitution, and extrinsic aging as determined by our environment such as sun light, pollution etc. We can only control the extrinsic factors. Hence avoid exposure to sun for long durations; use good sunscreen lotions which protects from both UVA and UVB induced damage and use correct clothing to suit the external conditions. Also avoid indulging in oily foods.
Regarding the choice of appropriate products; well, there is no single product in the market which can address all types of problems. It is more important to avoid side effects. So, the choice should be really safe, based on your skin type. Topical retinol, though not over-the-counter product, is giving good results. I would suggest you consult a dermatologist, get your skin type checked and then go for any such product based on doctor’s advise.
